My Overall Impression (Score of 83 %)

I realized a few weeks ago that summer was almost over when I saw a few trees starting to turn color already.  That means, I’m brewing as much sun tea as possible during the final warm weeks.  This Blood Orange Fruit Blend I recently found on one of my travels and decided why not.

From opening the package, I realized that this would be a great sun tea, but I would love to try this one when citrus is plentiful in the Spring.  Lancaster Tea company created a wonderful blend with the brew.  Its inviting aroma from the open package is fantastic.  This carries over to the brew (a bit muted) but still inviting and strong from the first sip, to the last.

This is one that does not have any tea in it (so more of a Tisane).  Do not let this stop you from enjoying it.  I could see this blended with a hint of Earl Grey or other black teas for an exciting pick me up.  Sitting on the patio with this is just as good.  It’s not listed on the above website but send them a quick note and they will get it to you.  Absolutely wonderful blend.

What do I think this Tea’s Personality is?

  • “I want to eat an orange popsicle with this to enjoy its bold citrus flavors.”

The Price

The price on 7/27/24 is $5.99 for 2 oz (w) or 56 grams.

Broken down:

  • 56 gm / 3 gm for steeping = 18 brews
  • 18 brews from package = app. 33 cents per quart or 16.5 cents per 8 oz cup.

Just a lovely distinctive style of tea that is refreshing and at a great price.

Aromas

  • In the package, it was a huge citrus potpourri with oranges, blood oranges, limes, tangerines.
  • It also had notes of dried apples, sage, and floral notes.
  • Once brewed the aroma was muted but still showed the intense citrus notes.
  • It reminded me of a fruit punch with a medley of citrus apples and berry notes.

Flavors

  • On the first sip, it’s a beautiful blend of light citrus flavors (oranges, bold oranges, limes, tangerines) with nothing really being the lead.
  • I loved the floral notes from the rose hips, hibiscus, and safflowers. It just adds another dimension to the brew.
  • Its off dry with good astringency and acid and low tannins.
  • I love its body/structure as it has some weight on your palate.

Scores

  • Aromas (4.2/5)
  • Flavors (8.1/10)
  • Overall impression (4.3/5)
    • Total score = 83 percent (16.6/20)

Foods to Pair and Why

  • My first thought would be to use this as mixed drink base. Steep some of the tea into water or sangria for an added flavor boost.
  • Easily, Orange Chicken over white rice with this would be perfect.
  • In the spring, I love to make citrus salads. Fresh peeled citrus with a hint of fresh basil is incredible.
  • Poaching chicken thighs in this brew would be a great flavor addition for a summer salad. Or it can be used as a brine prior to smoking.
  • Apple season is just starting in MI. However, its still warm outside so I would love to make a chilled soup with this as the base.  Some pureed apples and pears with either curry, tarragon or oregano in the blend would be a terrific addition.
