My Overall Impression (Score of 87.25 %)
My job allows me to travel all over and I always need the ability to brew a cup of tea. Not just to have the option to wake up in the morning, but to have if I’m out visiting a client, I would love the ability to easily brew a cup.
Now I have evaluated several options, but I was sent this package from Umit Tea Sets to review. Their Lucky Character Travel Tea set is a great option for an affordable travel kit. This easily fit in my backpack with my laptop and everything else and could get under the airplane seat in front of me. It’s able to brew a good 6 oz cup of tea that you can enjoy in the included mini cups or one large cup that you provide. It’s a durable glazed finish that will last.
My only true negative is that tea leaves will pour into your cups due to the large holes in the pot. You may want to pack a strainer if this is a concern for you. Normally, I just need my caffeine dose, so I’m used to it.
Overall, if you are new to travel tea sets, this is a great option to start with.
What do I think this Set’s Personality is?
- “I’m a small but very functional set that will allow you to enjoy tea anywhere you travel to.”
The Price
The price on 11/3024 is $29.98. Not a bad price for a beginner set to travel with as it’s functional, usable, easy to clean and versatile.
Appearance
- I love that this comes in a lightweight but durable hard-shell case. It includes a handy carrying strap
- It’s small enough to be able to pack it in a carry on like my backpack.
- I love the case material as it’s easy to clean
- It comes with a teapot and lid along with three cups.
- The teapot has some weight to it with a nice ergonomic shape. I love the mini handles on the side so it’s easy to pick up.
- The cups each have a good weight to them, with a thin durable rim making it easy to drink from.
Pros- good weight, nice durable case, weight on the pot and cups
Cons – case could be a bit thicker
Durability
- Upon using it, I like the thicker walls on the pot and cups. It seems like these will last a long time.
- The case is easy to clean and maintain. I did get some small scratches on it during use in my carryon.
- Both the pot, lid and cups were extremely easy to clean, dry and maintain. The durable glaze in the cuts and pot will last a long time.
- Would like to see some way to protect the cups and teapot lid other than packing foam to prevent chipping.
Pros – thick walls will contribute to long use, easy to clean
Cons – keep foam to protect cups and lid
Functionality
- The teapot itself holds 6 oz easily which allows for a good cup of tea or several pours if using the included cups. However, I love a decent size cup of tea, and this answers that with flying colors.
- The included cups hold a bit less than 2 cups which is great for small pours.
- It’s extremely easy to use and I was able to make a cup with only one hand on the pot to pour. The handles do get a bit hot but comfortable.
Pros – easy to use and maintain
Cons – cups and pot get a bit hot but can still be held
Test Brew
I brewed a 2-gm sample of Earl Grey Blue Flower from the Houseoftea.ca which is one of my favorites. This was brewed at 205 F in 6 oz of water for 2.5 minutes. I sampled the brew in both my regular tasting cup and the cups provided in the kit.
- The teapot handles were warm but comfortable to pour and manage. The cups were the same as well.
- In the smaller cups the aroma was a bit flat/muted. No issue in the larger cup.
- The flavor profile was similar to my tasting cup for both.
- Due to the color, it’s a bit hard to tell with a lighter brew the actual color of the tea due to the beige finish.
- When pouring, the leaves passed through the teapot into the mini cups readily due to the hole size. A strainer of some type would be a great option.
- Cleaning was a breeze as everything cleaned up well with soap and water.
Pros – Brew was flavorful and easy to pour and sample, cleaning was easy.
Cons – aroma a bit muted, leaves passed through in the cup (no strainer options)
